In this book, which accompanies the Channel 4 TV series A Brush with Art, Alwyn Crawshaw sets out to remove some of the mystique of painting and to inspire even the most hesitant of beginners to 'have a go'. Alwyn's warm and enthusiastic personality makes him the ideal teacher and he shows that painting can be easier than you think.
For the many people who would love to paint but don't know where to start, help is at hand. A Brush With Art takes you through the various stages of watercolour painting in an entertaining and easy-to-follow way. Each of the 12 sections is a self-contained lesson, featuring a different location and explaining how to paint it successfully in watercolour. Alwyn demonstrates the different techniques required in each case and then shows how to use them to build up a painting.
Alwyn gives advice on all the essential aspects of watercolour painting - mixing colours and laying a wash, sketching, composing a picture, portraying light and shade, tonal values and perspective - introducing these gradually to instil a growing confidence in the beginner. With Alwyn to guide you, you'll find that in no time you are producing watercolour paintings to be proud of. (Frontflap of book – 1992 BCA edition) |

Besides lecturing to art groups and societies, Alwyn frequently runs residential painting holidays which are extremely popular. He is a regular contributor to Leisure Painter magazine and has made several videos on painting.
In addition to A Brush with Art for Channel 4, Alwyn has made two further television series, one on working with oils and another about painting on holiday. (Backflap of book – 1992 BCA edition) |
